The "Literary Journal" (LJ) of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia holds a unique place in the history of Armenian periodical press. Over the past two decades, the journal has successfully fulfilled its scientific, organizational, and publishing missions, navigating a complex and challenging path.

The journal was founded in 2004 and has been regularly published since then. Moreover, during the first two years, four issues were published annually; starting from 2009, the journal switched to a biannual format, and in 2012-2016, combined issues were published. Since 2017, two issues have been released each year.

Throughout its history, the journal’s editorial board has included prominent literary scholars such as A. Grigoryan, Av. Isahakyan, H. Edoyan, A. Dolukhanyan, V. Gabrielyan, S. Sarinyan, and others. In 2004-2009, the journal's chief editor was Doctor of Philology Azat Yeghiazaryan, with Doctor of Philology Grigor Hakobyan serving as deputy editor.

In 2009 and 2010, the journal was edited by Doctor of Philology Norayr Adalyan, with Doctor of Philology Suren Abrahamyan as deputy editor. In subsequent years, the editorial board expanded with new members. Since 2010, the journal's editor-in-chief has been Doctor of Philology, professor Suren Abrahamyan, with Doctor of Philology Vardan Devrikyan serving as the chair of the editorial council.

The content structure established in the first issue of the journal — covering "Literary History and Theory," "Theory of Criticism," "History and Theory of Foreign Literature," "Philological," "Aesthetic," "Cultural Studies," "Reviews," and "Our Jubilee Celebrants" — has remained consistent over the years while undergoing occasional adjustments and refinements.

The journal publishes materials in three languages — Armenian, Russian, and English — with corresponding summaries/ annotations, making its content comprehensible to an international audience. With an initial print run of 100 to 300 copies, since its foundation the multilingual periodical has been distributed to academic departments, libraries, and research institutions.

Although the current print run has decreased to 100-150 copies, the journal continues to reach its readers and researchers as effectively as before.

The journal publishes literary, cultural, aesthetic, critical, and theoretical articles written by Armenian and foreign specialists in Armenian, Russian, and English. These articles cover a wide range of topics, including the history of Armenian literature of various periods, the Armenian language, and significant cultural and scientific events in Armenia, the diaspora, and abroad. Additionally, the journal highlights notable Armenian studies publications.

The journal comprehensively highlights Armenian and World literary and cultural life, emphasizing the interconnections and exchanges between different nations and cultures. It has made a significant contribution to contemporary Armenian literary studies, the history of literature, and critical research.

The journal consistently prioritizes topics of general literary and historical-philological interest, thereby broadening its scientific scope and establishing itself as a publication with diverse coverage. Its sections on publications, reviews, and scientific information are particularly rich, regularly featuring unpublished letters from notable literary figures, archival documents of various types, and reviews of significant Armenian and general cultural publications.

The articles published in the journal are definitely distinguished by their rich and multifaceted literary foundations. Contributors include renowned literary scholars from both Armenia and abroad have been published here. This broad involvement of authors not only reflects the journal's recognition but also attests to its worldwide high scientific reputation and authority.

Reflecting on more than two decades of activity, it is clear that the "Literary Journal," published by NAS RA M. Abeghyan Institute of Literature, has successfully brought together literary scholars from Armenia and abroad. The journal has effectively achieved its program goals and objectives, making significant contributions to Armenian literary studies, the history of literature, and critical research.
