  • Mariam Vanyan - STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS AS A MONTAGE TECHNIQUE IN MICHAEL CUNNINGHAM’S NOVELS

    The article examines the stream of consciousness as a montage narrative principle in the novels of Michael Cunningham. Based on the theoretical propositions of American literary critic Robert Humphrey, it can be argued that montage in the text acts as the main mechanism for organizing consciousness, replacing linear narrative with transitions determined by the principles of fragmentation, simultaneity, and juxtaposition. The analysis focuses on Cunninghams novels The Hours, Specimen Days, and Day, where spatial, temporal, and cross-editing techniques regulate the movement of consciousness between characters and narrative layers that are not directly connected to each other. It is worth noting that the extensive use of various montage techniques in all three novels allows Cunningham to create an internal synchrony between different psychological states, forming a unified field of perception in conditions of simultaneous ruptures in the narrative. Due to this approach, montage can be viewed as a central principle of the expression and organization of consciousness.
